- Job profile: Job of Train Clerk include checking the number of wagons and coaches in Railway yard, preparing train documents like Vehicle Guidance(VG), feeding these information in railway network terminals, giving and receiving information from control regarding train working, maintenance of registers related with working of trains etc.
- The job can be in either in Stations or Control offices in Divisional/Zonal headquarters. Job of train clerk in Control office is fully indoor whereas job of station train clerk is partly indoor and partly outdoor.
Recruitment(Ref 1)
- 50% of vacancies are filled by direct recruitment through Railway Recruitment Boards(RRBs). Out of total 25 % of the post in the categories of Section Controllers, Station Masters, Yard Masters and Traffic Inspectors, 10% will be filled through Traffic Apprentices selected through Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) from amongst serving staff (other than Ministerial) in the Traffic (Transportation) Department who are graduates and are upto 40 years of age.
- 33-⅓% of vacancies are filled by promotion by a process of selection from eligible Group D categories of Traffic and Commercial departments with 3 years of continuous service. This minimum service condition does not apply to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates.
- 6-⅔% by promotion entirely on merit of Matriculate Group 'D' employees from eligible categories, as specified by the Zonal Railways with a minimum of 2 years regular service in the concerned seniority unit on the basis of a competitive examination consisting of Written Test (85 marks )and Record of Service (15 marks).
Qualification for Direct Recruitment
- Matriculation or its equivalent with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate (Ref 1)

- Sr. Trains clerk (GP 2400) ->>
- Chief Trains clerk (GP 4200)
Train Clerks/Senior Trains Clerks are also eligible for consideration for promotion by selection as Goods Guards and Assistant Station Masters(ASM).
Selection Process : Written Examination followed by Document Verification.
Training: There will be 45 days training for Train Clerks in respective Zonal training institutes. Training module consists of General Rules and Coaching theory.

Other Allowances depend on various conditions and hence cant be stated uniformly. Other major allowances include :

I am a BCA graduate and I applied for the Railway centralized employment notice: 03/2012. For which all posts will I be considered as I don't have the Diploma from Railway Bhawan.
I have started the in general preparation for the exam, but just wanted to be sure which specific posts should I refer when buying model or previous year papers: Traffic apprentice or goods guard or Assit. Station Master.. And which particular zone will the passed out candidates be posted to??
